Todd Foley

Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow of East Asian Studies

Research Interests: Todd received his PhD in the field of modern Chinese literature in the spring of 2015. His dissertation explores the relationship between ideas of human and animal in modern and contemporary Chinese literature, which involves comparative readings of works by Lu Xun, Lao She, Xiao Hong, Jiang Rong, Mo Yan, and Yu Hua. He has published articles on Lu Xun, Can Xue, and the notion of Chinese literature at the 2012 London Book Fair, and his translation work (from Chinese to English) has included several academic articles as well as documentary film clips. Recently he has taught courses in critical theory and literature at Connecticut College and Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, and he looks forward to continuing to work with students at NYU.

Yong Woo Lee

Research Interests: His primary research and teaching interests focus on media and cultural studies, popular culture in East Asia, film theory, critical musicology, intellectual history of wartime Japan and postwar Korea, and post/colonial historiography. Yongwoo Lee was an affiliated fellow at Leiden University’s IIAS, Netherlands, and Singapore’s ISEAS -Yusof Ishak Institute (2014-2015). He was a senior researcher at the Institute of Asian Cultural Development of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Republic of Korea (2013-2014). He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Art History and Communication Studies at McGill University (2010) and an M.A. in Media and Cultural Studies from Seoul National University (2002). He taught East Asian media and cultural studies at Cornell University (2010-2013) as a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Society for the Humanities, and research fellow in Interdisciplinary Information Studies at the University of Tokyo (2006-2007).
